Dubai, August 7, 2017

The United Nations Development Programme in collaboration with the General Authority of Youth and Sports Welfare and the Emirates Youth Council is proud to announce the commencement of this year’s International Youth Day Celebration in the United Arab Emirates. Under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Nahyan Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Culture and Knowledge Development, the IYD is slated to begin on August 9 at the InterContinental in Dubai Festival City. The chosen theme for 2017 is “Youth Building Peace.”

The event is expected to bring together significant experts from the government, civil society, and private sector in the presence of the United Nations officials to discuss the various ways to empower young people who are key change agents contributing to building and sustaining peace.

UN International Youth Day, celebrated annually on August 12, was announced by the General Assembly in 1999 as a day for celebrating young people’s initiatives and potential. The UAE recognizes the day as an opportunity to focus on the role of youth in the development of the country. It aims to unlock the potential of young Emiratis by encouraging community participation and the pursuit of leadership roles through different national and regional endeavors.

The day will start with keynote speeches from UAE ministers and UN officials followed by a film commemorating the importance of youth will be shown during the opening ceremony. Panels will follow, discussing the IYD’s theme and opportunities for youth in the government and private sector.
