A Home Big Enough for EveryoneJun 20, 2017
“No one leaves home unless home is the mouth of a shark”, strong words that were used by the Somali-born British poet Warsan Shire few years ago to raise awareness about the world refugee crisis. Shire also has another powerful verse in her poem that says, “No one puts their children in a boat unless the water is safer than the land”.
World Refugee Day, 20 June, is an annual global moment to observe those who were forced by life’s misfortune to leave their homes and search for survival opportunities somewhere else.
As stated by UNHCR, 65.6 million people around the world were forced from home, 10 million stateless people have no access to basic rights such as education, healthcare, employment and freedom of movement, and nearly 20 people are forcibly displaced every minute because of conflict or persecution. It is indeed the highest level of displacement ever recorded in history. The time is now for the international community to stand with and support refugees.
The United Nations as a key global actor highly concerned with humanitarian issues spares no effort to support the vulnerable all over the world. The Middle East has recently witnessed several consecutive humanitarian crises and millions of lives were negatively affected.
The United Nations country team in the UAE is no exception from other UN teams working relentlessly to support refugees and provide better life opportunities to the displaced. Through its different UN organs in the UAE like UNHCR, UNOCHA and WFP, the United Nations country team is working with their national and regional counterparts to mobilise humanitarian relief support.
Currently, the organization’s largest Global Stockpile of humanitarian supplies lies in the UAE since 2006. Thanks to the hospitality and generosity of the UAE, UN has the capacity to respond to any emergency worldwide and assist up to 300,000 people within 72 hours from its UAE-based global stockpile. The strategic location of the UAE, world-class logistic infrastructure, supportive host government and access to huge supplier markets make UN in UAE ideally situated to deliver critical relief assistance to operations around the world.
The United Nations country team in UAE will continue working with the government, civil society, private sector and any other entities for the sake of empowering the displaced and making life less challenging for them.
The World Refugee Day is an international observance that no one wishes to witness again the next year, but till the day comes where nobody is left vulnerable away from their home, let’s all stand for refugees and raise our prayers for enough global peace to go around.
