World leaders have pledged to achieve the eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). These are to: eradicate extreme poverty and hunger; achieve universal primary education; promote gender equality and empower women; reduce child mortality; improve maternal health; combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases; ensure environmental sustainability, and develop a global partnership for development that the overarching goal of cutting poverty in half by 2015.
UNDP is uniquely positioned to facilitate and coordinate national and global efforts to monitor and achieve the MDGs through its extensive partnership networks, while at the same time help developing countries attract and use aid effectively for the same purpose.
